Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials built from metal nodes and organic linkers. Indian research groups use them for gas adsorption, CO2 capture, catalysis, sensing and drug delivery. Buying a ready-made MOF saves weeks of synthesis and characterisation. This guide from Aritech Nanomaterials India compares common MOFs.
Popular MOFs compared
| MOF | Metal | Notable features |
|---|---|---|
| ZIF-8 | Zinc | Good thermal and chemical stability, hydrophobic pores, widely used in membranes |
| ZIF-67 | Cobalt | Popular precursor for cobalt/carbon electrocatalysts |
| UiO-66 | Zirconium | Excellent water and chemical stability; amine version UiO-66-NH2 |
| HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC) | Copper | High surface area and open metal sites; moisture-sensitive |
| MIL-101(Cr), MIL-53 | Chromium, aluminium | Large pores, used in adsorption and catalysis |
Specifications to check
- BET surface area (m²/g) and pore volume
- Crystallinity: PXRD pattern matching the reference
- Particle size if you are making membranes or films
- Activation state: whether the material is supplied activated or as-synthesised
How to activate a MOF
As-received MOFs usually contain adsorbed water or solvent in their pores. Before gas adsorption or catalysis, they are typically activated by heating under vacuum. The temperature depends on the framework – it must remove guests without collapsing the structure – so follow the data sheet. Some MOFs are first solvent-exchanged with a low-boiling solvent such as methanol or acetone to make activation gentler.
Storage
Store MOFs in tightly sealed containers in a desiccator or glovebox. Moisture-sensitive frameworks such as HKUST-1 can lose surface area if left open to humid air, which is common in many parts of India.
MOF linkers and precursors
If you synthesise your own MOFs, Aritech also supplies linkers such as 2-methylimidazole and terephthalic acid, and metal salts such as zinc nitrate, zirconium chloride and copper nitrate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which MOF is most stable in water?
Zirconium MOFs such as UiO-66 are among the most water-stable. ZIF-8 is also fairly robust, while HKUST-1 is sensitive to moisture.
Are MOFs supplied activated?
This depends on the product. Most MOFs should be activated before measurement; the data sheet gives the recommended conditions.
Can Aritech supply MOFs in larger quantities?
Yes. Many MOFs are available from research packs to larger quantities. Send the MOF and quantity to sales@chemazone.in for an INR quotation.
