Importing Nanomaterials vs Buying from an Indian Distributor: What Indian Labs Should Know

Many specialised nanomaterials are manufactured outside India. Indian buyers therefore have two routes: import directly from an overseas supplier, or buy from an Indian distributor who handles the import. Both are legitimate. This guide from Aritech Nanomaterials India explains the practical differences so your purchase team can choose.

Route 1: Importing directly

  • Payment: usually in a foreign currency by international wire transfer, often in advance.
  • Customs: your institution (or its customs broker) files the import paperwork and pays any applicable duty and IGST at the port.
  • Concessions: some publicly funded research institutions registered with DSIR can import certain research goods at concessional customs duty, using their own registration and certificates. This benefit belongs to the importing institution and requires it to be the importer of record.
  • Lead time: depends on international freight and customs clearance, which can add days or weeks.
  • Support: technical and after-sales communication is with an overseas team, across time zones.

Route 2: Buying from an Indian distributor

  • Payment: in Indian Rupees by NEFT, RTGS, IMPS or UPI, or against a purchase order.
  • Invoice: a domestic GST tax invoice, so GST-registered buyers can claim input tax credit where eligible.
  • Customs: handled by the distributor. You receive a domestic delivery — nothing to clear at your end.
  • Documents: quotation, proforma invoice, COA and SDS supplied in a format Indian purchase committees are used to.
  • Support: a local team in Indian business hours, and one point of contact for replacements or claims.

Which is better for you?

Direct import can make sense for large, planned orders by institutions that regularly import and can use their own concessions. For most research-scale and repeat purchases — especially by start-ups, private companies and departments without an import desk — a domestic purchase is simpler, faster to approve and easier to support.

If you are unsure, ask for both: Aritech can quote a domestic supply in INR, and your purchase team can compare it with an import quote on a landed-cost basis.

Tip: compare landed cost, not list price

When comparing, add up the product price, international freight, insurance, customs duty and IGST, bank charges, broker fees and the time your staff spend on clearance. The domestic quotation already includes delivery to your door, so it should be compared with that full figure.
