Graphene Oxide vs Reduced Graphene Oxide vs Graphene Nanoplatelets: Which One Should You Buy?

“Graphene” on a product page can mean very different materials. Ordering the wrong one is one of the most common — and expensive — mistakes in graphene research. This guide from Aritech Nanomaterials India compares the three most-requested graphene materials and explains what to specify.

Quick comparison

Graphene oxide (GO) Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)
Structure Graphene sheets with many oxygen groups GO with most oxygen groups removed Stacks of a few to tens of graphene layers
Dispersibility Excellent in water Moderate, needs solvents or surfactants Needs good mixing or surfactants
Electrical conductivity Low (insulating) Moderate to good Good
Typical uses Membranes, bio-research, composites, precursor to rGO Electrodes, sensors, conductive coatings Polymer fillers, thermal pastes, lubricants, coatings

When to choose graphene oxide

Choose GO when you need a material that disperses easily in water, can be functionalised through its oxygen groups, or will be reduced later in your own process. It is widely used for filtration membranes, hydrogels, drug-delivery research and as a starting point for rGO. Specify: form (powder, paste or dispersion), concentration for dispersions, lateral flake size and, if relevant, the C/O ratio.

When to choose reduced graphene oxide

rGO is a good compromise when you need electrical conductivity but still want a material that is easier to process than pristine graphene. It is common in supercapacitor and battery electrodes, electrochemical sensors and conductive inks. Ask about the reduction method (thermal or chemical), because it affects conductivity and residual oxygen content.

When to choose graphene nanoplatelets

GNPs are the practical choice for larger-volume applications — reinforcing plastics and rubber, improving thermal conductivity, adding barrier properties to coatings, or as conductive additives. Key specifications are thickness (number of layers or nm), lateral size (µm) and surface area (m2/g).

And CVD graphene?

If you need a continuous single- or few-layer film on a substrate for devices, transparent electrodes or membrane studies, none of the powders above will substitute for CVD graphene. Specify substrate (Cu, SiO2/Si, glass, PET), size and number of layers.

What to put in your enquiry

  • The application and the property you care about most (conductivity, dispersibility, surface area).
  • Form and quantity.
  • Specification limits, if your project or tender has them.
  • Documents required: COA, SDS, TDS.
