How to Buy MXene in India: Grades, Forms and an Ordering Checklist

MXenes have moved quickly from a lab curiosity to one of the most studied 2D materials in Indian universities and R&D centres. Yet many first-time buyers are unsure which form to order, how it should arrive, and what to check before it goes into an experiment. This guide from Aritech Nanomaterials India walks through the decisions in the order you will meet them.

1. Start with the application, not the product name

The same chemical formula — for example Ti3C2Tx — is sold in several forms. The right one depends on what you plan to do:

  • Supercapacitor and battery electrodes: multilayer or few-layer powder is usually easiest to mix into slurries.
  • Thin films, coatings and EMI shielding: a delaminated (single/few-layer) aqueous dispersion gives smoother, more conductive films.
  • Sensors and catalysis: few-layer flakes or dispersions offer more accessible surface area.
  • Making your own MXene: order the MAX phase precursor, such as Ti3AlC2 or Ti2AlC, and etch it in your lab.

2. Understand the main forms

Form What it is Typical use
MAX phase powder Layered carbide/nitride precursor containing the “A” element (e.g. Al) Etching to MXene, ceramics
Multilayer MXene Etched “accordion-like” particles, not yet delaminated Electrodes, composites
Few-layer / delaminated MXene Separated flakes, often as a dispersion Films, inks, coatings
MXene dispersion Flakes in water or solvent at a stated concentration Spray, drop-cast, vacuum filtration

3. Questions to ask before ordering

  • Which MXene composition (Ti3C2, Ti2C, V2C, Nb2C, Mo2C…) and which precursor was used?
  • Which etching route was used? HF-based and LiF/HCl routes give different surface terminations (–O, –OH, –F, –Cl).
  • For dispersions: concentration (mg/mL), medium, and the flake size range.
  • What characterization data is available — XRD, SEM, and where relevant XPS or Raman?
  • How will it be packed and shipped, and what is the recommended storage?

4. Storage and shelf life matter

MXenes, especially in water, can slowly oxidise. Good practice is to keep dispersions refrigerated, sealed and away from light, to use them within the period recommended on the data sheet, and to avoid repeated opening. Dry powders should be kept tightly closed, ideally under inert gas or in a desiccator. Plan your purchase quantity around your experiment schedule rather than buying far more than you can use.

5. Documents to request

Ask for the Certificate of Analysis (COA), Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and, if available, a Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Indian purchase committees often need these with the quotation, so it saves time to request them at the enquiry stage.

6. Ordering in India: practical checklist

  1. Product name or link, composition and form.
  2. Quantity and preferred pack size.
  3. Any specification limits (purity, flake size, concentration).
  4. Institute or company name, GSTIN and billing address.
  5. Delivery address with PIN code and contact person.
  6. Whether you need a proforma invoice for advance payment or will issue a purchase order.
