Safe Handling and Storage of Nanopowders in the Lab: A Practical Checklist

Nanopowders behave differently from bulk chemicals: they become airborne easily, have very high surface area, and some are reactive or pyrophoric. A few simple habits make a big difference to safety and to the quality of your results. This checklist from Aritech Nanomaterials India is a starting point — always follow the product’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and your institution’s safety rules.

Before you open the container

  • Read the SDS, especially sections on hazards, handling, storage and exposure controls.
  • Plan to work in a fume hood, ventilated enclosure or glove box — not on an open bench.
  • Have the right spill materials and waste container ready.

Personal protective equipment

  • Nitrile gloves (consider double gloving), lab coat with closed cuffs and safety glasses.
  • Respiratory protection where the SDS or your safety officer requires it, particularly when handling dry powders outside an enclosure.

Weighing and transfer

  • Weigh inside a ventilated balance enclosure where possible.
  • Use anti-static spatulas and weighing boats to reduce powder scatter.
  • Open containers slowly; fine powders can puff out when the seal is broken.
  • Where your method allows, move to a dispersion early — liquids are far easier to handle safely than dry powder.

Reactive and pyrophoric materials

Very fine metal powders such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium, iron and some alloys can oxidise rapidly or ignite in air. Handle these under inert atmosphere (argon or nitrogen) as directed on the SDS, keep them away from ignition sources and water where specified, and never sweep them dry.

Storage

  • Keep containers tightly closed and clearly labelled with the name, batch number and date opened.
  • Store in a cool, dry place; use a desiccator or inert-gas cabinet for moisture- or air-sensitive materials.
  • Refrigerate dispersions or MXenes only if the data sheet recommends it.
  • Separate oxidisers, reactive metals and flammables.

Spills

  • Do not dry-sweep or use compressed air.
  • Use wet wiping or a HEPA-filtered vacuum approved for the material.
  • Collect waste in a sealed, labelled container.

Waste disposal

Treat nanomaterial waste as chemical waste. Dispose of it through your institution’s hazardous waste system and in line with applicable Indian regulations, including the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, where relevant.

Good records

Keep the SDS and COA with your lab records, and note the batch number in your lab notebook. If a result looks unusual, the batch details make it much easier to investigate.
